If you're an angler seeking the ultimate fly fishing adventure, look no further than the stunning shores of Cancun, Mexico. Nestled along the sparkling Caribbean Sea, Cancun offers a plethora of opportunities for both novice and seasoned fishermen alike. From the shallow flats to the deep blue waters, Cancun has it all. Let's dive into the world of fly fishing in this tropical paradise.
Cancun Fly Fishing and Light Tackle, A Dream Destination
Cancun is renowned for its pristine beaches, vibrant nightlife, and of course, fantastic fishing. Whether you're staying in the heart of the Cancun Hotel Zone or exploring the nearby Riviera Maya, Cancun serves as the perfect gateway to an unforgettable fishing experience. With its convenient location and abundance of fishing charters, Cancun is a haven for anglers from around the globe. Baby tarpon cruise the lagoons, and most fishing charters in Cancun fish this area or go deep sea. However, for those seeking the excitement of Cancun flats fishing, a short trip can be arranged to visit the Isla Blanca area, where light tackle or fly fishing can get you a grand slam before you head back for your beach side margarita.
Fly Fishing Charters: Fishing Trips for Bonefish, Snook, & Tarpon
One of the best ways to explore the waters of Cancun is by booking a fly fishing charter. These guided fishing tours excursions take you to the hottest fishing spots, ensuring you have the best chance of reeling in that trophy catch. Whether you're targeting tarpon, snook, bonefish, or permit, experienced guides will put you on the fish and provide valuable insights into local fishing techniques. If you are only up for a four hour trip, then the lagoon is conveniently located in the Cancun Hotel Zone, and several Cancun fishing charters will pick you up at a variety of marinas.
Light Tackle Fishing in Cancun: A Thrilling Alternative
For those who prefer a more hands-on approach, Cancun also offers exceptional light spinning tackle fishing opportunities. Anglers can test their skills against a variety of species, including barracuda, jack, and snapper. A friend of mine took his 6 year old son on a half day trip as they didn't have a lot of time, and the lagoon was perfect for a fishing for snook holed up in the mangroves. For those not skilled with a fly rod, flats fishing charters can still get you looking for bonefish and permit in the shallows. Shore fishing is also permitted in Cancun, and no license is necessary, but you must be at least 50 meters away from any swimmers. This makes fishing without a boat difficult.
Isla Blanca: A Hidden Gem for Fly Fishing Trips
Just a short drive from Cancun lies Isla Blanca, a pristine stretch of coastline known for its crystal-clear waters and abundant marine life, and also one of the best spots for permit fishing or going for a grand slam. This secluded paradise is a mecca for fly fishing enthusiasts, offering access to shallow flats teeming with bonefish, tarpon, and snook. This is a bit of a boat ride so I would highly recommend making this a full day trip. Great fly fishing starts in the flats with tailing permit and bonefish. Then cruise to the deeper waters and go fishing for good sized tarpon and snook. With any luck you can get all four in one day on the water, a saltwater fly fisherman's dream.
Bonefish Flats Fishing: The Ultimate Challenge
An Isla Blanca trip is a game of stealth and precision. Anglers wade through shallow waters, scanning the flats for signs of feeding fish. We slowly poled along looking for movement or "nervous water." Permit would also cruise right behind rays so my guide instructed me to cast to their tails. After a permit and bonefish were landed, it was time for fishing for tarpon. Across the waterway was another lagoon of deeper water with rolling fish. Only a few casts and a good sized tarpon took the fly, several jumps and a good fight and the fish was boat side. A leader land before one last run and the fish had me under the boat near the motor. I was not fast enough, and another jump and he was gone. Time for snook, but I decided I wanted to trout set about a half dozen fish. To me, Isla Blanca offers an unparalleled fishing experience, topping locations like the Keys and Cozumel.
Planning Your Fly Fishing Cancun Adventure
When planning your fly fishing trip to Cancun, there are a few things to keep in mind. Fishing in Mexico is permitted without a fishing license, but access is limited, and though beaches aren't private, hotels will tell you that you cannot fish there. A short time fishing isn't worth the potential troubles. Most larger charters in Cancun and Isla Blanca can arrange transportation for you. Uber and Taxi's have a bit of a conflict going on so try to arrange transportation with the fly fishing guides or hotels. In Cancun light tackle and fly fishing gear selection is very limited, so if you plan to fish on your own, pack your own. Don't forget to pack essential gear such as sunscreen, polarized sunglasses, and plenty of water.
My experiences have been with two fly fishing tours: Cancun Light Tackle and Fly Fishing Charters and Cancun Fly Fishing. I booked a 4 hour tour on the lagoon and was disappointed with the guide and the fishing. We did have one group of tarpon to cast for and a snook, but the guide's disposition and chain smoking made for a less than desirable experience. In contrast, my trip with Bernardo at Cancun Fly Fishing was amazing. Described above in writing about Isla Blanca, it was perhaps my best saltwater experience., ranking right up there with Cozumel. Bernardo was kind, patient, and put me on fish. I am already planning another trip in the future with them.
On a side note, I highly recommend a trip on the ferry to Isla Mujeres. While there is no fishing to be done, this area offers unique restaurants and shopping. Taxis are readily available, but most people rent a scooter or golf cart for the day to get from one side of the island to the other. See the sights or snorkel right off of the beach in the Playa Mujeres area.
