Special Regulation Trout Water: Spring Creeks Trip

Explore the region while fishing some of the most technical limestone streams in the Shenandoah Valley. Fish the renowned Mossy Creek near Harrisonburg, VA. Known for it's well educated brown trout that can reach over 20", dry flies are often studied and refused if the presentation isn't perfect. Small flies and midge patterns can be used to lure out wary fish, and larger fish will hit streamers, especially after an afternoon rain. Further south down the Appalachian Mountains is the town of Lexington, known for it's historical buildings and recreation on the Maury River. Just outside of town sits Buffalo Creek, another smaller spring creek with both brown and rainbow trout.

Fly fishing for trout on this stream can be productive with caddis imitations or using a hopper dropper rig. Fishing this stream in its upper reaches is more like most Blue Ridge Mountain streams. There is a north and south Buffalo Creek that can be fished and the angling pressure is less than Mossy Creek. The last stop on Day 3 is Spring Run just over the Alleghany Mountains in Bath County. The Department of Game and Inland Fisheries has a fish hatchery just upstream of this 1.5 mile stretch before it tumbles into the Cowpasture River. One of the least visit streams in the area due to its remote location in the George Washington National Forest, you can be sure to have a shot at a spring creek slam. Yes, brook trout are in these waters, too. As these are cold-water streams peak season is usually anytime from March-November.

Because these streams are on private property you are required to have a valid fishing license as well as landowner permit. This special regulations permit is required to fish Buffalo Creek and Mossy Creek. These are free and able to be obtained online or at any nearby Virginia Department of Game and Inland Fisheries.
